House passes bill requiring paid time off for voting

The Massachusetts House of Representatives passed H.4217, An Act protecting the right to time off for voting, which allows employees whose work schedules don’t permit them to vote during polling hours to request paid time off to cast their ballots in person on election day. The bill adds to the voting protections passed in the VOTES Act and removes more barriers to voting in Massachusetts.

“The legislation that was advanced by the House today will help to guarantee that every Massachusetts voter has time to vote on Election Day, regardless of the constraints of their job, a critical step towards ensuring that every eligible voter has the chance to make their voice heard at the ballot box,” Speaker Mariano said in a statement.
