MA House passes law to shield personal cellphone data collection

The Massachusetts House of Representatives unanimously passed H.357, An Act protecting reproductive health access, gender affirming care, religious liberty, and freedom of movement by banning the sale of cell phone location information, also known as the Location Shield Act. This bill prohibits cell phone carriers and other data providers from selling cellphone data and location information collected during visits to health care facilities in Massachusetts that offer reproductive and gender-affirming care.
The legislation is another step in Massachusetts’ efforts to protect access to reproductive health care and was taken in response to efforts from extremists in a post-Roe v. Wade landscape. Rep. Hogan is grateful to Speaker Mariano, HW&M Chair Aaron Michlewitz, State Rep Kate Lipper-Grarabedian and House colleagues for their commitment to this issue.
The bill now goes to the Senate for its consideration.
