April 26 was ‘Denim Day’ at the State House, when Massachusetts leaders stood with survivors to raise awareness, reduce stigma and protest the misconception around sexual violence by wearing denim.
Denim Day began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the judges felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who raped her remove the jeans, implying consent. The next day, the women of the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the survivor.
In the US, over half of women and almost 1 in 3 men have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetime. Let’s protect each other! Join the movement to end violence at denimday.org
